Description

Delicious and hearty Baked Ravioli layered with seasoned ground beef, marinara sauce, and melted mozzarella cheese, perfect for a comforting family dinner. This easy casserole can be made with refrigerated or frozen ravioli and is ideal for make-ahead meals.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Seasonings

  • 3/4 lb. ground beef
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce (mild, does not add spiciness)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Vegetables and Dairy

  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 24 oz. marinara sauce
  • 1/2 cup half and half
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese, divided

Pasta

  • 20 oz. refrigerated ravioli (uncooked; can substitute frozen ravioli)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) so it’s ready for baking the casserole.
  2. Cook Ground Beef: Season the ground beef with salt and pepper. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook and crumble the beef for about 3 minutes until starting to brown.
  3. Add Seasonings and Onion: Stir in onion powder, dried basil, dried oregano, mustard powder, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and diced onion. Continue cooking for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Add Garlic: Add minced garlic and cook for 1 more minute. Tilt the skillet to spoon out any excess grease, then reduce the heat to low.
  5. Combine Sauce: Spread 3/4 cup marinara sauce evenly on the bottom of a 9×13-inch casserole dish. Add the remaining marinara sauce to the skillet with the meat mixture along with half and half, stirring to combine. Remove from heat.
  6. Layer the Casserole: Place half of the ravioli in a single layer in the casserole dish. Top with half of the meat sauce, then sprinkle 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese over it.
  7. Complete Layers: Add the remaining ravioli on top, followed by the rest of the meat sauce and the remaining mozzarella cheese.
  8. Cover and Bake: Cover the dish with foil (spray one side with non-stick cooking spray to prevent cheese from sticking) and bake for 35 minutes.
  9. Broil to Finish: Remove foil and broil on high (450°F) for 1-2 minutes to brown the cheese on top. Watch carefully to prevent burning.
  10. Serve: Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving hot.

Notes

  • This casserole works well with refrigerated or frozen ravioli, making it very versatile.
  • It can be assembled ahead of time and refrigerated or frozen until ready to bake.
  • For a crispier top without broiling, you can bake uncovered for the last 10 minutes.
  • If using frozen ravioli, you may need to add a few extra minutes to the baking time.
