Description

This classic Apple Cobbler recipe features tender, cinnamon-spiced apple slices baked under a buttery, biscuit-like topping. Perfectly sweetened with brown sugar and flavored with vanilla and warm spices, this comforting dessert is great served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

Scale

Apple Filling:

  • 4 pounds apples, peeled, cored, and sliced to ¼-inch thickness (1.8kg)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • ⅓ cup packed light brown sugar (73g)
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes (56g)

Topping:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (240g)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar (100g)
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup whole milk (180ml)
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted (56g)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to get it ready for baking the cobbler.
  2. Prepare Apple Filling: In a large mixing bowl, toss the peeled and sliced apples with fresh lemon juice to prevent browning. Add the brown sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract, mixing thoroughly to coat the apples evenly. Transfer this mixture into a 9×13-inch baking dish. Dot the top with small cubes of cold unsalted butter for added richness.
  3. Make the Topping: In a separate large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add the whole milk and melted butter, stirring with a spatula until the flour is fully moistened, forming a loose batter.
  4. Assemble and Bake: Scatter the topping mixture evenly over the apple filling in the baking dish; it doesn’t need to completely cover the apples. Bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges.
  5. Cool and Serve: Remove the cobbler from the oven and let it cool for 10 minutes before serving. This cooling time helps the fruit juices thicken slightly for a better texture. Serve warm, ideally topped with vanilla ice cream for an irresistible treat.
  6. Storage: Cover any leftovers and refrigerate for up to 5 days.

Notes

  • Allow the cobbler to cool slightly before serving to let the juices thicken and avoid a runny dessert.
  • Use tart apples like Granny Smith for a balanced sweetness and firm texture.
  • Serve warm topped with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for extra indulgence.
  • Leftovers can be reheated in the microwave or oven and will keep refrigerated for up to 5 days.
