Description

Creamy Garlic Shrimp Over Mashed Potatoes is a luxurious comfort food classic featuring tender shrimp sautéed in a rich, garlicky cream sauce served over fluffy mashed potatoes. This easy-to-make dish combines simple ingredients with indulgent flavors, perfect for a satisfying weeknight dinner or special occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Shrimp

  • 1 lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Creamy Garlic Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh thyme leaves (for garnish)

For the Mashed Potatoes

  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • ½ cup warm milk
  • ¼ cup butter
  • Salt, to taste

Instructions

  1. Make the Mashed Potatoes: Boil the peeled and cubed potatoes in salted water until fork-tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and return them to the pot. Mash with butter and warm milk until smooth and creamy. Season with salt to taste. Cover and keep warm.
  2. Cook the Shrimp: Toss the shrimp with olive oil, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and cook shrimp for 2–3 minutes per side until pink and cooked through. Avoid overcrowding; cook in batches if necessary. Remove shrimp and set aside.
  3. Make the Creamy Garlic Sauce: In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté minced garlic until fragrant, about 1 minute. Pour in heavy cream and gently simmer. Stir in Parmesan cheese and Dijon mustard if using. Season with salt and pepper. Let the sauce simmer for 3–5 minutes until slightly thickened.
  4. Assemble the Dish: Spoon mashed potatoes onto plates. Top with cooked shrimp. Pour creamy garlic sauce over shrimp and potatoes. Garnish with fresh thyme leaves. Serve immediately while warm and creamy.

Notes

  • Warming the milk before adding to potatoes helps keep them smooth and fluffy.
  • Do not overcrowd the skillet when cooking shrimp to ensure even searing.
  • For extra flavor, add a splash of white wine or a pinch of red chili flakes to the sauce.
  • Use fresh thyme leaves for a fresh herbal garnish.
