Description

American Chop Suey is a comforting one-pot American classic packed with ground beef, tender elbow macaroni, and a rich tomato sauce, all perfectly seasoned and topped with melted cheddar cheese and fresh parsley. This hearty dish is simple to prepare and perfect for a family dinner, ready in just 45 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 lbs (900g) ground beef (90/10)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 cups (730ml) beef broth
  • 29oz (820g) can tomato sauce
  • 28oz (790g) can diced tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 2.5 cups (375g) uncooked elbow macaroni noodles
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • Parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Brown the Ground Beef: In a dutch oven over medium-high heat, heat the olive oil and brown the ground beef until fully cooked with no pink remaining. Drain excess grease, transfer the beef to a bowl, and set aside.
  2. Sauté Onions and Garlic: Return the dutch oven to heat, add chopped onions, and cook until translucent, about 3 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
  3. Add Liquids and Seasonings: Return ground beef to the pot. Add beef broth, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, paprika, salt, pepper, and bay leaves. Stir well and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10 minutes.
  4. Cook the Macaroni: Stir in the uncooked elbow macaroni noodles. Cover and continue to simmer on low heat, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes or until noodles are al dente and cooked through.
  5. Finish and Serve: Remove from heat, discard bay leaves, and stir in shredded cheddar cheese until melted. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley before serving.

Notes

  • American Chop Suey is a hearty, one-pot meal that’s easy to prepare and perfect for busy weeknights.
  • Use lean ground beef to reduce excess grease and keep the dish healthier.
  • Feel free to substitute elbow macaroni with other small pasta shapes like penne or rotini.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste; adding a pinch of red pepper flakes can add a nice heat if desired.
  • Leftovers store well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat nicely on the stovetop or microwave.
