Description

This Easy Biscuits and Gravy Bake is a hearty and comforting breakfast casserole featuring layers of flaky buttermilk biscuits, savory sausage gravy, crispy tater tots, fluffy eggs, and melted cheddar cheese, all baked together for a crowd-pleasing morning dish.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Biscuits

  • 4 buttermilk biscuits, baked, cooled, and cut into quarters

Sausage Gravy

  • 1 pound ground pork
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 packet (1.25 ounces) country gravy mix
  • 2 cups (490 g) whole milk

Base Layer

  • 44 frozen tater tots, or enough to fill the bottom of your baking dish

Egg Mixture

  • 4 large eggs, beaten

Toppings

  • 1 cup (113 g) mild cheddar cheese, shredded
  • parsley, chopped for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cook the Pork Sausage: To a large non-stick skillet over medium heat, add the ground pork. Season with kosher salt, garlic powder, and black pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally and breaking up the meat as it cooks, for about 8-10 minutes, or until no longer pink. Drain excess grease if necessary.
  2. Make the Gravy: Sprinkle the country gravy mix evenly over the cooked pork, stirring to coat. While stirring constantly, slowly pour in the whole milk. Bring to a simmer and cook until the mixture thickens, about 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat.
  3. Prepare the Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Spray an 8×8-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  4. Assemble the Casserole: Line the bottom of the prepared baking dish with frozen tater tots to form an even layer. Place the biscuit quarters evenly over the tater tots. Pour the beaten eggs evenly over the biscuits. Then, top with the prepared country sausage gravy and spread it evenly. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the entire casserole.
  5. Bake: Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes. In the last few minutes of baking, remove the foil to allow the cheese to melt and brown slightly.
  6. Finish and Serve: Remove the casserole from the oven and garnish with freshly chopped parsley. Serve hot for a delicious breakfast or brunch meal.

Notes

  • You can prepare the sausage gravy in advance to save time in the morning.
  • Substitute ground turkey or chicken for pork if desired.
  • To make it spicier, add red pepper flakes to the sausage.
  • Use any cheese you prefer, or combine multiple types for extra flavor.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated as needed.
