Description

This Patty Melt with Secret Sauce recipe delivers a classic diner experience at home. Caramelized onions, juicy beef patties, melted cheese, and a tangy secret sauce are sandwiched between slices of buttery rye bread for a truly satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Secret Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon pickle juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Patty Melts:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 12 ounces 85/15 ground beef
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese

Instructions

Secret Sauce:

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, pickle juice, paprika, and garlic powder until smooth. Set aside.

Patty Melts:

  1. Caramelize Onions: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add onions and cook until softened and deeply caramelized, about 30 minutes or more. Add a splash of water if they start to burn. Remove and set aside.
  2. Form Patties: In a bowl, combine ground beef, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Form into four thin, oblong patties.
  3. Cook Patties: Cook patties in a skillet over medium heat until browned on both sides. Remove and set aside. Wipe excess grease from the pan.
  4. Assemble Sandwiches: Butter one side of each bread slice. In the skillet, layer sandwiches: bread (buttered side down), Swiss cheese, beef patty, caramelized onions, secret sauce, cheddar cheese, and bread (buttered side up).
  5. Cook Sandwiches: Cook until golden brown on the bottom, flip, and cook until golden brown on the other side (1-2 minutes per side).

Notes

  • The secret sauce recipe makes extra, which can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
