Description

This Potatoes Au Gratin recipe features tender potatoes baked in a creamy cheese sauce with a golden brown topping. A classic comfort food that’s perfect for any occasion.


Ingredients

  • 6 medium red potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prep: Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×9 baking dish.
  2. Make Cheese Sauce: Melt butter in a saucepan. Whisk in flour and cook until golden brown. Slowly whisk in milk and cream until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in salt, pepper, and 1 cup cheddar cheese.
  3. Layer Ingredients: Layer a third of the potatoes in the prepared dish, followed by a third of the sauce, Parmesan cheese, and remaining cheddar cheese. Repeat layers twice.
  4. Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 1 hour. Uncover and bake for 20-30 minutes more, or until golden brown and bubbly.
  5. Cool and Serve: Let cool for 15-20 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use Gruyère cheese instead of cheddar cheese.
  • If the sauce is too thick, add a little more milk or cream to thin it out.
  • To prevent the potatoes from browning, cover the dish with foil during the first hour of baking.
