Scale
For the Hamburger Steaks
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup chopped onion
- 1 Tbsp beef bouillon powder
- 3 slices white bread, torn into pieces
- Salt and pepper, to taste
For the Gravy
- 1 can cream of onion soup
- 1 can water (use the empty soup can to measure)
- 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
Instructions
- Prepare the Egg and Onion Mixture: In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, chopped onion, beef bouillon powder, and a generous pinch of salt and pepper until well combined.
- Soak the Bread: Tear the white bread slices into bite-sized pieces and soak them in the egg and onion mixture, allowing the bread to absorb all the liquid and flavors.
- Combine with Beef: In a large bowl, add the soaked bread mixture to the ground beef. Knead the mixture using your hands until thoroughly combined and uniform.
- Shape the Patties: Divide the mixture into 8 equal portions and form each into a patty, about 1/2-inch thick for even cooking.
- Cook the Patties: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Place the patties in the skillet and cook until well browned on both sides and cooked through, about 4-5 minutes per side. Remove the cooked patties from the skillet and set aside.
- Prepare the Gravy: In the same skillet, add the can of cream of onion soup, one can of water, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir and cook over medium heat until the sauce is hot and well combined.
- Smother the Patties: Return the cooked patties to the skillet, turning them to coat thoroughly in the gravy. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let the patties simmer in the sauce for 20 minutes to absorb all the flavors.
- Serve: Remove the skillet from heat. Serve the smothered hamburger steaks hot, spooning extra gravy over each serving as desired.
Notes
- You can substitute cream of onion soup with cream of mushroom for a different flavor.
- Serve over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles for a complete meal.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Use lean ground beef for a less greasy result.
- Add sautéed mushrooms to the gravy for extra richness.
