Description

This vibrant homemade salsa combines fresh tomatoes, zesty lime, and aromatic cilantro for a perfect balance of flavors. Quick to prepare and customizable to your taste, it’s an ideal accompaniment for chips, tacos, or as a flavorful topping for various dishes.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 ripe tomatoes (Roma or small tomatoes)
  • 1 (14.5 ounce/411g) can whole or diced tomatoes, drained
  • 1/2 red onion, quartered
  • 12 jalapeno peppers, halved and seeded (optional)
  • 1/3 cup packed fresh cilantro leaves
  • 3 large cloves garlic, peeled
  • 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Combine ingredients: Add all ingredients to a food processor.
  2. In a food processor, combine the fresh tomatoes, canned tomatoes, red onion, jalapeno peppers (if using), cilantro, garlic, lime juice, sugar (if using), cumin, chili powder (if using), salt, and black pepper.
  3. Process to desired consistency: Pulse until ingredients are finely chopped or reach your preferred texture.
  4. Use the pulse function on your food processor to chop the ingredients. For a chunkier salsa, pulse fewer times. For a smoother consistency, pulse more. Taste the salsa and adjust seasonings if needed.
  5. Chill and serve: Transfer to a bowl or jar and refrigerate.
  6. Pour the salsa into a serving bowl or storage container. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow flavors to meld. The salsa can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Notes

  • Use ripe, fresh tomatoes for the best flavor. Ripe tomatoes are deep red and heavy for their size.
  • For extra spicy salsa, add a 4-ounce can of green chiles or ½-1 teaspoon of spicy chili powder.
  • Adjust the texture by pulsing more for smoother salsa or less for chunkier salsa.
  • Chilling the salsa for a few hours or overnight enhances the flavors.
